Work out $(8\times10^8)+(8.4\times10^{7})$ . Give your answer in standard form.

Method

1) Convert both values to ordinary numbers

2) Add or subtract

3) Convert back to standard form

Convert to ordinary numbers first (p. 44):

8\times10^{8}=800000000

and

8.4\times10^{7}=84000000

800000000+84000000=884000000

Convert the sum back to standard form, with the leading number at least 1 and less than 10.

8.84\times10^{8}
