GB-29-03-001 · Density of a mixture
Two liquids have masses 257.5 g and 60.9 g and volumes 103 cm³ and 29 cm³ respectively. They are mixed. Assume their volumes add. Work out the density of the mixture to 2 decimal places.
Mass, Density, Volume ("MeDiVa" Table)
Booklet p. 54
Method
1) Draw MeDiVa table (D | M | V) for Liquid A, Liquid B, and Total
2) Add masses and volumes (NEVER add density column!)
3) Total D = Total M ÷ Total V
Worked Example (GB-29-03-001)
NEVER add or subtract in the Density column! Add Masses and Volumes first.
| Liquid | D (Density) | M (Mass g) | V (Volume cm³) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liquid A | — | ||
| Liquid B | — | ||
| Total Mixture |
2.41 g/cm³
