GB-31-06-001 · Comparing distributions

Class A has median score 24 and interquartile range 18. Class B has median score 27 and interquartile range 13. Give two comparisons of the classes’ results.

Comparing Distributions (Medians & IQRs) Booklet p. 71
Method
1) Write 1 sentence comparing medians ("on average...")
2) Write 1 sentence comparing IQRs ("less spread out, therefore more consistent") in context
Worked Example (GB-31-06-001)
Booklet p. 71 — Must write 2 sentences in context:
1) Compare Medians (On average): State which group has a higher/lower median and what that means in context.
2) Compare IQRs (Spread / Consistency): State which group has a smaller IQR and is therefore more consistent / less spread out.
• B has a higher median (27 versus 24), so higher typical scores.
• B has a smaller IQR (13 versus 18), so the middle 50% are less spread out.
Class B has higher typical scores and less spread in the middle 50%.
